Josephine Nabbanga, a cricket farmer in Uganda's Masaka district, highlights the challenges of traditional feed sources. Crickets are a popular high-protein snack, but the costs of their feed have been a barrier to growth in this sector. In response, researchers from Uganda Christian University have developed a cost-effective cricket feed using food waste, making the production of crickets more sustainable and affordable.
This innovative approach not only addresses the rising costs of animal feed but also tackles the issue of urban food waste, which significantly contributes to environmental problems in cities like Kampala. By converting food scraps into nutritious cricket feed, farmers can expect faster growth rates in crickets, reducing the maturity time from 12 weeks to around 8 to 10 weeks.
Furthermore, Nabbanga's project demonstrates potential economic benefits. As farmers save on feed costs, they can expand their cricket farming practices, thus generating more income while contributing to a circular economy by partnering with local restaurants for food waste. This initiative is a step towards improving household nutrition and developing a sustainable agricultural system in Uganda.
