Researchers at Rice University and Oak Ridge National Laboratory made a new physics-based model. The study appears in The Journal of Chemical Physics. The model links molecular-scale motion to the signals that clinical MRI machines measure.
MRI scans often use contrast agents with a gadolinium ion inside an organic shell. These agents change how nearby water molecules relax. The new framework solves the Fokker-Planck equation to follow molecular positions and velocities. It finds eigenmodes that describe how water responds. The framework reproduces measurements at clinical MRI frequencies and the team has released the code as open source. The work grew from molecular dynamics simulations and has support from several research groups.
