In Kasawo, north of Kampala, farmers now use a locally made single cocoa fermenting box. It replaces the older system of four stacked wooden boxes and makes fermentation easier.
The single box reaches better fermentation faster, and beans become brown with a chocolate aroma. Farmers report higher income: they now receive 35,000 Ugandan Shillings per unit, up from about 25,000 before the innovation. This change removes the need for middlemen.
Researchers say the design is easier to use, gender-sensitive and suitable for people with disabilities. A longer-lasting steel version is also being explored.
