The kidneys filter blood and remove waste from the body every day. However, severe infections, surgery, or dehydration can cause sudden kidney damage. This injury affects about one in five adults in hospitals. Some patients later develop long-term kidney problems.
Researchers studied how kidneys repair their protective system after an injury. They focused on special immune cells called macrophages. These cells act as first responders in healthy kidneys. When damage occurs, many of these cells are lost.
The study showed that kidney cells send chemical signals to bring back new macrophages. These new cells then change from causing inflammation to healing the damaged tissue. This knowledge could help scientists create better medical treatments in the future.
