Summer sun gives ultraviolet radiation that can cause sunburn and skin ageing. People use sunscreen to reduce this risk. Bemotrizinol is an ingredient that has been widely used in Europe and Asia.

The Food and Drug Administration approved bemotrizinol for use in the United States. Bemotrizinol is a chemical filter that absorbs UVA rays and blocks UVB rays. The approval means companies may add it to sunscreens sold in the US, but they must reformulate and test products first. It is not yet clear when these sunscreens will reach store shelves.
