Every day, the kidneys filter about 50 gallons of blood, remove waste, and balance fluid levels in the human body. However, conditions like severe infections, dehydration, trauma, or surgery can cause acute kidney injury. This sudden damage affects about one in five hospitalized adults and can lead to chronic kidney disease.
A research team at Tulane University studied how kidneys restore their immune defenses after an injury occurs. The study was published in the journal Cells and focused on specialized immune cells known as macrophages. In healthy kidneys, macrophages remove dead tissue and monitor for dangerous infections.
By using a mouse model and advanced single-cell sequencing, the scientists tracked how these protective cells return after an injury. First, kidney epithelial cells send chemical signals to recruit new macrophages. As these new cells arrive, they gradually stop causing inflammation and start helping the tissue repair itself. Ultimately, this discovery could help researchers develop new treatments that prevent lasting kidney damage in patients.
