The government of El Salvador has promoted artificial intelligence since 2023 to modernize public services. In 2024 Google opened an office in the country, and the telemedicine app DoctorSV began in 2025 with support from the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) and Google.
In April 2026 the government announced a second phase that adds an AI assistant to DoctorSV. Supporters say it will improve care and save time. But medical workers and unions report worse public services, shortages and a lack of transparency. They also point to past privacy problems and other concerns about the program.
