Dry January is a monthlong challenge in which people stop drinking alcohol for a month. It began as a small wellness idea and has become a larger cultural movement that many people try.

Experts say people join mainly for health reasons and because the month gives a clear, time‑bound goal. A psychology professor notes that many participants post on social media, which raises awareness and creates community support.

Taking part can improve sleep, energy and sometimes weight or mood. For some people the change lasts beyond the month, but those who drink heavily should get medical advice before stopping.
