At the Conference on Public Health in Africa (CPHIA) in Durban, self-reliance was the main message. Landry Dongmo Tsague, director at Africa CDC’s Centre for Primary Health Care, said AI and digital tools can help countries become more independent.

Africa CDC plans two levels of AI use. First, inside the centre for planning, reporting, finance, procurement and monitoring. Second, to support member states at community and primary-care sites where many outbreaks start. Rwanda’s National Health Intelligence Centre already uses AI to track outbreaks, maternal emergencies and support telemedicine.

Data ownership and protection are central. Africa CDC is building a Continental Health Data Governance Framework. Tsague said algorithms need African data. Also, basic infrastructure and domestic financing are required for digital tools to work.
