Researchers first found antibodies in people who had mpox or who had been vaccinated. The team in Italy identified a set of antibodies in blood samples. A second team at a US university used the AlphaFold 3 AI model to predict which viral surface proteins the antibodies attach to.

The AI predicted that several antibodies bind to a protein called OPG153. Laboratory tests confirmed the prediction. When researchers gave an engineered version of that protein to mice, the animals produced antibodies that neutralized the virus. The finding could lead to a simpler vaccine ingredient or to antibody treatments.
