Some primary care clinics now use membership fees. These include concierge practices and direct primary care (DPC). Patients pay a monthly or annual fee for more time with clinicians and more personal visits.

Researchers analysed more than 6,000 of these practices from 2018 to 2023. The number of sites rose from 1,658 to 3,036, and the number of clinicians rose from 3,935 to 7,021. The study says this growth may change who can get routine care and where clinicians choose to work.
