Archaeologists uncovered a large stone-lined basin in the centre of Gabii, 11 miles east of Rome. The basin dates to about 250 BCE and stands near the main crossroads. Its size and position suggest it could have been a monumental pool connected to a forum or public space.
The basin is part of several discoveries at Gabii, including a terraced complex called the Area F Building. Gabii was first settled in the Early Iron Age and was mostly abandoned by 50 B.C. Italy’s Ministry of Culture made the site an archaeological park, and work will continue next summer. Researchers plan to clear the basin, study a nearby stone-paved area and check a thermal imaging 'anomaly'.
