Scientists know that the human immune system weakens with age. The body produces fewer new T cells, and existing cells become tired and less effective against viruses and cancer. Delivering repair instructions to these fragile cells was always very difficult.
Now, a research team has found a new solution. They used microscopic silicon nanowires to deliver instructions into aging T cells safely. This treatment targeted specific genes and successfully restored youthful functions in the cells.
The team tested cells from older adults and cancer patients, and the cells became much more active. Currently, these effects last for about two weeks. Researchers are working to make this treatment last longer in the future.
