A review of decades of research shows that highly processed foods are present in most binge-eating episodes, while minimally processed foods are uncommon. The review finds the same foods again and again: cake, ice cream, cookies, chocolate, pastries, pizza and chips.

Binge eating began to appear in research around the 1970s, about the time processed foods became more common. The study's authors say the findings could change how clinicians, families and policymakers approach prevention and treatment by asking them to think about how the food environment affects binge eating. The study appears in the International Journal of Eating Disorders.
