Researchers led by Shane P. Singh wanted to know if short emotions make winners feel better about democracy. To test this, they studied times when people felt joy but where there were no political effects.

The team surveyed fans before and after the 2022 Super Bowl and before and after the 2022 World Cup final. They also showed movie clips that made people happy or sad. Emotions changed a lot, but people's views of democracy did not change in any meaningful way. The researchers conclude that policy and expectations matter more than short moods.
