On April 12, 2026 Hungary held a national election that many people watched closely. The vote was discussed a lot because of foreign ties: the US president publicly supported the incumbent, and the government had friendly relations with Russia. A US official visited Budapest before the vote, and a recording by the foreign minister also shaped the debate.

Voters chose between the long-time ruling FIDESZ and the newer TISZA party. TISZA leader Péter Magyar ran as pro‑EU and said he would reverse autocratic changes to courts and the media. Turnout was high at 79.5 percent. After the result, supporters celebrated but some voters were disappointed.
