On April 28, Ion Ceban, the mayor of Chișinău, posted a photo with Donald Trump Jr. The image was first published in Russian on April 29 by NewsMaker.Md and later translated and republished by Global Voices.

Ceban said they met in Bucharest and used the caption "Make Moldova Great Again." He wrote they discussed relations between Moldova and the United States and that they "agreed to continue the dialogue." The photo began wide discussion on social media and some users joked about the mayor.

The meeting comes as Moldova faces problems after a recent suspension of USAID programmes. The suspension forced the government and NGOs to look for funding from Europe and affected a planned high-voltage line project with Romania.
