A severe cholera outbreak began in July 2024 and has spread across all 18 states of Sudan. The World Health Organization reported the disease in 133 areas, and more than 105,000 cases and over 2,600 deaths have been recorded. Cholera causes severe diarrhoea and fast dehydration.
Heavy rains and floods have damaged weak sewage systems and washed waste into streets and homes. Stagnant pools and flies increased contamination. The war forced many people to flee, and camps often lack clean water and sanitation. Around 80% of health facilities are out of service. In Tawila, about 370,000 people fled earlier this year and MSF treated more than 2,300 patients, overwhelming a 130-bed centre. UN agencies say US$50 million is needed but only 16% has been received.
