Daily travel in the North West region is now dangerous and more expensive. The armed conflict in the North West and South West has lasted nine years and many roads are blocked. Since the October 12 election results, separatist fighters increased road blockages around the region.
Buses stopped on some lines and people use Okada motorcycles. A short trip on the Bamenda–Menchum road rose from FCFA 700 to FCFA 5,000. On Bamenda–Bafmeng a seat rose from FCFA 3,000 to FCFA 25,000 or FCFA 30,000 if the traveller has luggage. Drivers say they charge extra because they risk their lives and meet many checkpoints.
