The 98th Academy Awards will be presented on March 15. Over time TV viewership for the Oscars has declined—peaking around 1998 and falling substantially by last year—yet the ceremony still carries cultural prestige and influence in the film industry.
David Tarleton, professor of film and chair of the film and media arts department at Syracuse University, says the Oscars can shape careers: a win or nomination often boosts box office, opens industry opportunities and can double a person’s pay for the next project. He cites the 2022 film Everything Everywhere All At Once, which began as a small project and became an indie success that won seven Oscars; that success was linked to the awards context.
Viewing habits have changed. Many people watch for the red carpet, fashion or memes, and some prefer highlights the next day. Home viewing is easier now, with large TVs and good sound and without the costs of parking, a babysitter or $18 popcorn. At the same time, the Oscars still require a theatrical release for eligibility, and Tarleton expects the Academy will keep that rule or make it stricter.
The Academy is taking concrete steps to adapt:
- from 2029 the awards will be streamed exclusively on YouTube,
- new categories have been added and pacing adjusted for social media,
- membership has diversified so non‑English films appear more often,
- public movements such as #OscarsSoWhite helped bring in new members.
Whether these changes will bring younger viewers remains unclear, but lower ratings have not erased the Oscars’ glamour and aura in Hollywood.
