In the United States, transportation is the largest source of carbon emissions, and personal vehicles create most of this pollution. Many consumers wonder whether it is better for the planet to drive a functional gas car until it breaks down or to switch to an electric vehicle earlier.
A new study published in the journal Science by researchers from California answered this question. They analyzed total carbon emissions across a vehicle's average sixteen-year lifespan. The findings show that replacing a gasoline car with an electric vehicle almost always reduces overall emissions, even if the gas car is scrapped early.
Although manufacturing an electric vehicle generates emissions, lower driving emissions make up for this difference in about three years. Replacing a gas car after just one year reduced carbon emissions by 58 percent over sixteen years.
There are a few exceptions, such as cars driven under 4,383 miles per year or areas that rely heavily on coal power. However, overall emission reductions occurred in 92 percent of the scenarios studied.
