Rabies kills many people and it is a big problem in Tanzania. The World Health Organization says about 1,500 people die each year from rabies after a dog bite. A full post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) vaccine series costs around US$100, and many families cannot pay it. More than 40 per cent of the population live below the $US2.15 a day poverty line.
The country follows the Zero by 30 strategy and plans changes by 2030. Teams are vaccinating dogs to reach at least 70 per cent. On Pemba mass vaccination stopped rabies. Health and veterinary services now work together with systems like Integrated Bite Case Management. New coolers, thermotolerant vaccines and mobile apps help reach remote villages.
