The Aravalli range is an important set of hills near Delhi. The hills help recharge groundwater, slow the nearby desert and support many plants and animals. People say they also moderate hot weather and reduce pollution effects.
On 20 November 2025 the Supreme Court accepted a government proposal to redefine which land counts as Aravalli. The new rule recognises only landforms that rise 100 metres above the local ground. The decision paused new mining leases and led to protests. Local groups formed after events in Gurugram in February 2025 and want stronger protection.
