African Swine Fever continues to threaten the Philippines’ pig industry and food security. Since 2019 the disease has spread to 76 out of 82 provinces, and six provinces recorded active cases last month. Authorities say the situation requires faster detection and stronger control measures.
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and BioAssets Corporation have introduced three new tools to detect and manage ASF: a rapid DNA extraction kit, a real-time detection kit designed for farmers, and a mobile biocontainment laboratory for rapid response and on-site diagnosis. DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum, Jr. described these interventions as examples of how science and innovation can provide holistic solutions, while undersecretary Constante Palabrica credited zoning and checkpoints for reducing cases and said no microbial mutations had been identified.
The government has also imported large quantities of the AVAC vaccine from Vietnam. The Philippines’ Food and Drug Administration said in 2024 that field trials ran for almost two years and claimed 100% efficacy with no side effects, but it has not released the trial data. AVAC Vietnam says its live-attenuated vaccine has been used since July 2022 and blames low vaccination rates for ongoing outbreaks. Critics point to a 2022 US Department of Agriculture notice warning that the ASFV-G-MGF strain is unstable and not safe for use in pigs because it could revert to virulence. The FAO in the Philippines said there is no cure and that control still depends on culling, biosecurity and movement restrictions; vaccines may be promising but are not a panacea.
