A new study suggests that a common plastic may increase the risk of liver damage.
Researchers focused on polyethylene, which makes up about one-third of global plastic production. This material is widely used in food packaging, storage containers, and beverage cup linings. According to the American Liver Foundation, fatty liver disease affects about 25 percent of people worldwide. The study found that polyethylene can increase signs of fatty liver disease on its own.
Furthermore, the plastic makes the condition worse when combined with an unhealthy diet high in fat and sugar. People who eat a Western-style diet with burgers and sodas may face a higher risk. Scientists from Texas A&M University and the University of Oklahoma led the research. They plan to conduct further studies to see if other microplastics cause similar harm.
