In early May 2026 health authorities received reports of a severe illness cluster in Ituri Province. Scientists at the national research institute in Kinshasa tested blood samples and identified Bundibugyo ebolavirus, a rare strain seen before.
Africa CDC helped to coordinate the response across countries after the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a public health emergency on 17 May. Africa CDC also declared a continental emergency the next day.
