Microplastics are tiny plastic particles that have accumulated throughout the environment, appearing in oceans, drinking water, and human tissues. Although environmental contamination is well-documented, scientists are still investigating the specific consequences for human health. A recent study published in the journal Science Advances warns that one of the most widely used plastics may increase the risk of fatty liver disease.
The investigation focused on polyethylene, a material that accounts for roughly one-third of global plastic production. Polyethylene is commonly used to produce food packaging, plastic wraps, storage containers, and beverage cup linings. Currently, fatty liver disease affects approximately 25 percent of the global population, according to the American Liver Foundation.
Researchers from Texas A&M University and the University of Oklahoma discovered that polyethylene independently increases signs of fatty liver disease. Moreover, exposure to this microplastic severely aggravates the condition when combined with a Western-style diet high in fat, fructose, and cholesterol.
Using an advanced imaging technology called spatial transcriptomics, scientists observed how polyethylene alters the liver's defense and repair mechanisms. The plastic activates a protein named PPAR-alpha, which regulates fat production, and affects a gene called ANXA2, which aids tissue repair. The research team plans to investigate whether polyethylene leads to later stages of liver disease, such as fibrosis.
