Researchers at the German University in Cairo developed two systems to keep solar panels free of desert dust. A company founded by engineer Hossam Mohamed commercialised the idea and the first commercial installation was placed in Cairo’s Fifth Settlement about a month ago. Early results are promising.
The electrically driven system uses a small motor and an unbalanced metal weight to make vibrations. An electronic unit controls when it runs. The system shakes off dust twice daily, at noon and at 3am, for about one minute each time. It can take power from the panel or a small independent battery and it uses an antistatic nano-coating.
Field trials showed lower losses with the new systems. The team is expanding production and has supplied another residential community in Giza governorate.
