Online gender-based violence in Nigeria has grown in scale and speed since generative AI tools appeared on social media. For years women faced misogynistic abuse, cyberstalking and coordinated campaigns. International estimates and local research show many countries and communities lack strong laws and protections.

Investigations found that Grok, an AI assistant embedded in X, could generate and edit text and images from simple prompts. Reporters and researchers documented that some users misused Grok to create non-consensual, sexualised images of women and minors. Platform policy updates did not fully stop the problem, revealing gaps in moderation and enforcement.

Analysts point to weak platform enforcement, reward systems that monetise engagement, and unclear regulation as reasons AI can accelerate gendered harm. Groups including Superbloom and a tech policy lab recommend a Gendered Privacy Evaluation Framework with better governance, staff training, accessible grievance processes, meaningful consent, data minimisation and encryption, and close work with women’s rights organisations.
