A well-known Carnival band, Tribe, put an adult toy shaped like a rose into goody bags for its women masqueraders. Unboxing videos on social media made the item a public controversy and drew attention from bloggers and news sites.

Roman Catholic Archbishop Jason Gordon criticised the gift from the pulpit, saying the move had “gone too far” and suggesting possible government regulation if bands did not restrain themselves. Tribe leader Dean Ackin defended the choice, saying Carnival is about “freedom, expression, fun and a little mischief” and that the band wants the experience to be “fresh, playful and memorable.”

Responses split along cultural, moral and commercial lines. Commentators linked the incident to capitalism, class and marketing that uses female sensuality. Gender and safety voices added that some women prefer solo sexual autonomy and that solo activity reduces pregnancy and STI risk. Parents and others called for accountability, and debate about possible regulation continues.
