Research published in Environmental Health reports that exposure to PFAS can reduce antibody production in adults and so weaken the immune response to a new virus. PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are used in many household and industrial products, including nonstick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics and firefighting foams. Because these chemicals do not easily break down, they can accumulate in the body; the study highlights PFHxS as a compound that can persist for nearly a decade.

The investigators studied people whose drinking water was contaminated and measured PFAS levels in blood. They found that higher PFAS concentrations were linked with fewer protective antibodies after exposure to a new virus. Courtney Carignan, senior author and environmental health researcher at Michigan State University, said antibodies act like "tiny soldiers" that help the body fight viruses, and a lower antibody response may reduce protection.

The association appeared strongest in older adults, men and people who are overweight, groups that often have higher PFAS burdens. Some residents have already reported visible harms: a Michigan mother described reduced vaccine effectiveness in her child and later became a clean water advocate with the Great Lakes PFAS Action Network.

The findings arrive as the United States moves to limit PFAS in drinking water: the EPA finalized its first enforceable standards for certain PFAS in 2024, though implementation timelines and enforcement for some compounds have shifted. The study supports efforts to reduce PFAS exposure through drinking water and to maintain monitoring and regulation. Source: Michigan State University.
