Researchers from ETH Zurich conducted a study on how views of uncertainty affect voting behavior. During uncertain times, such as crises or elections, people often seek simple answers and can turn to populist movements. However, this study aimed to find out if uncertainty could also be seen as an opportunity for positive change.
The experiment involved a group that viewed a presentation highlighting positive outcomes of uncertainty. This group showed a more favorable attitude toward diversity and was less likely to support populist parties, such as the AfD. Notably, this change in mindset persisted even after one month.
By promoting a perspective that embraces uncertainty, there is potential for strengthening democracy. The study highlights the possibility that how we perceive uncertainty can influence political views and support for extreme parties (like AfD). Researchers believe the findings can apply to other issues, like climate change and technology.
