A University of Zurich study asked 1,442 young people to write about events that shaped their lives. Participants answered at ages 15, 17, 20 and 24. Researchers used computer methods to sort thousands of free-text answers into topics.

Most events were described in positive terms. Common topics were school and training, friendships and romantic relationships, personal development and travel. The study found that people with more anxiety or depression mentioned stressful relationship problems and failures more often and positive events less often.

Authors say services for young people should focus not only on coping with stress but also on stable relationships, positive experiences and chances to gain self-confidence.
