Contrast sensitivity testing uses letters in shades of gray that get lighter, while traditional charts use high contrast black and white letters. The contrast test can spot trouble that regular acuity tests miss.
The team used data from a large national survey of Medicare beneficiaries to make the results representative. Adults 65 and older who report poor vision despite normal exams may benefit from contrast testing because early changes can appear before standard acuity gets worse, and some causes can be treated.
