China is the third largest lithium producer in the world. New discoveries of lithium in Nigeria have attracted international and Chinese investors. A report says more than 80 percent of lithium mining projects in Nigeria are financed by Chinese investors. At a conference in October 2025 Nigeria's minister said Chinese firms invested more than USD 1.3 billion in processing since September 2023 and invited more partners to invest.

The Nigerian government made a 2023 rule that companies must process minerals on site before export. Artisanal mining is common, risky and often illegal. In December 2024 miners and traders said children sometimes work at sites. Activists ask for stronger rules and safeguards. A geology consultant proposed five measures to make mining cleaner and safer.
