A report says more than 80 percent of lithium mining projects in Nigeria are financed by Chinese investors. At a conference in October 2025 Nigeria's minister said Chinese firms invested more than USD 1.3 billion in processing since September 2023 and invited more partners to invest.
The Nigerian government made a 2023 rule that companies must process minerals on site before export. Artisanal mining is common, risky and often illegal.
