At a recent Belt and Road Journalists Forum in China, media representatives from developing nations expressed serious concerns about the prevalence of fake news generated by artificial intelligence (AI). This misinformation poses significant risks, such as destabilizing societies through enhanced social or political tensions. To combat these challenges, the journalists called for a united effort to hold social media platforms like Facebook accountable for the content they distribute.
One major proposal was to pressure Facebook to consistently label AI-created content, allowing users to differentiate between genuine and fabricated news. Representatives emphasized the importance of making these labels available in local languages, as well.
Khalid Taimur Akram from the Pakistan Research Centre for a Community with a Shared Future suggested that the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) could help establish a comprehensive database of national news agencies. This initiative aims to counter misinformation and promote positive narratives about BRI among its member countries. The forum highlighted that cooperation and shared resources could be essential in the fight against AI-driven misinformation.
