Protests began in the first year of Javier Milei's government in 2024. Young people said austerity, inflation and cuts to public higher education threatened access to university and social mobility.
Students organised the Marcha Federal Universitaria in April 2024 and repeated it in October. They used hashtags such as #MarchaFederalUniversitaria and organised through TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp and X threads. Street actions were combined with videos, posts and graphic material online so the message spread quickly.
Mass marches later drew many people into the streets to demand restored funding and better health services.
