Protests started in Madagascar on September 25 because of long power cuts and water shortages. The protests grew to include anger about corruption, food insecurity and calls for the president to leave office.

On October 12 the president disappeared and was later reported to have travelled via Reunion to Dubai. Demonstrations were mostly peaceful and organised through social media, but authorities used heavy repression and the UN said 22 people were killed.

Young people in Morocco began mass demonstrations in mid-September after the deaths of eight women in childbirth. Volunteers helped protesters with medical care, legal support and food.
