Hija Kamran writes that she is cautious about new technologies and often adopts them late. She says tech companies show their main commitment is to business models, not to people. When she asked about harmful content and advertising, a company representative told her, "I encourage people to read our terms of service."
The article explains that technology is not neutral. Training data from the internet and public records reflects histories of exclusion, racism, sexism and economic inequality. When AI learns from that data, it can encode and amplify harms. Kamran calls for a human rights approach and recommends asking who built a system, how it works and who benefits.
