The Funan Techo Canal groundbreaking was held on August 5, 2024 in Prek Takeo Village, Kandal province, with about 10,000 attendees. Prime Minister Hun Manet pressed a symbolic button at 9:09 am as the event was broadcast across state and private media.
Planners describe the canal as a 180-kilometer waterway starting at the Mekong’s Preak Takeo tributary in Kandal, passing through Takeo and Kampot and reaching Kep on the coast. Technical details include a width of 100 meters, depth 5,4 meters and vessel capacity up to 3,000 deadweight tons. The government says the canal will link Phnom Penh to the Gulf of Thailand and strengthen Cambodia as a regional logistics hub.
Supporters expect jobs, investment and better water management. Critics warn of environmental harm to the Mekong, which supports millions and many fish species, and of risks to Vietnam’s delta. Reports said construction stopped for several months after the inauguration, although the government denied funding problems.
