Mamokgethi Phakeng is a well‑known South African mathematician who became vice‑chancellor of the University of Cape Town in July 2018. She was the first black woman to obtain a doctorate in mathematics education and has since received national and international honours.

Her awards include the Order of the Baobab (Silver) and a doctorate of science from the University of Bristol. In October 2021 the University of Bristol appointed her as its first Illustrious Visiting Professor; in that role she will engage with the academic community, give public lectures and help strengthen research and education links between the two universities.

Phakeng began teaching in rural farm schools and later joined academia. She sits on the boards of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls and the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator. She warns that many girls are discouraged from maths and advises daily practice to build confidence and career options.
