Lung cancer remains a major cause of cancer deaths in the United States, creating an urgent need for effective treatments. A new study published in the journal Molecular Therapy introduces a promising approach to overcome drug resistance in non-small cell lung cancer.
Researchers at the Stony Brook Cancer Center developed a new therapy that combines a natural tumor-suppressing molecule with a standard chemotherapy drug. This new agent, called Gem-miR-129, was tested in a laboratory mouse model and showed significant potential.
The study highlights several key benefits of the new treatment. First, it enters cancer cells independently. Second, it shuts down three different proteins that drive cancer growth. Third, tumor shrinkage in mice reached more than 95 percent, and survival time increased by many weeks. Importantly, researchers noted that the agent caused no noticeable toxic side effects in the model.
The next step for the team is to establish the safety profile of Gem-miR-129 with the goal of eventually starting human clinical trials.
