Moharaj Sharma is a poet, journalist and documentary maker who has worked in radio and television for two decades. He is News Editor at AP1 Television and hosts a weekly literary segment. He is a long-time member of the International Nepali Literary Society and has received honours from INLS and other institutions.
Sharma’s research looks at the linguistic roots of Nepali and Sanskrit. He made a documentary about the resilience of Nepali-speaking Bhutanese refugees. He notes a historic movement in 1624 AD of Nepali households to Bhutan, and later, in the 1990s, a policy that led to the expulsion of over 100,000 Nepali speakers who lived in camps in eastern Nepal for nearly two decades before resettling in several countries.
He links journalism, poetry and documentary: journalism brings facts and voices, poetry gives sensitivity, and documentary combines both in visual form. His forthcoming poetry collection deals with diaspora identity, social change and the tension between tradition and modernity.
