Researchers report that a rapid liquid biopsy can speed diagnosis of Burkitt lymphoma in endemic areas. The study, published in March in Nature Medicine as “Liquid biopsy for the diagnosis of EBV-positive Burkitt’s lymphoma in endemic areas”, was carried out in Tanzania and Uganda from August 2019 to July 2023 and involved children and young adults aged three to 25 years. Teams from the University of Oxford and Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Dar es Salaam took part in the work.
The minimally invasive test uses a blood sample to detect tumour DNA associated with Burkitt lymphoma. In the study, liquid biopsy cut median diagnostic turnaround time from 46.8 days to 6.5 days and allowed 93.3 per cent of Burkitt lymphoma cases to be diagnosed within one week, compared with 40 per cent using tissue biopsy alone. The authors report high accuracy and say the test can be integrated into routine clinical workflows as a faster, complementary tool for earlier treatment decisions.
The researchers note practical challenges: the technology requires specialised sequencing infrastructure, reliable supply chains and trained personnel. They have worked to build local capacity so tests can be run within the region rather than relying on external laboratories. Project partners are planning clinical trials to evaluate implementation in routine healthcare and are engaging ministries of health about scale‑up. The project is part of the NIHR‑funded AI‑REAL consortium (Aggressive Infection‑Related East Africa Lymphoma).
Independent experts welcomed the study. Bruno Sunguya said it shows precision medicine research can be led from within low‑ and middle‑income countries, while Adedayo Joseph highlighted access, cost and local expertise as key factors for the test to benefit people across the continent.
