The Vatican announced on May 8 that, after three unsuccessful ballots in the conclave, Robert Francis Prevost had been elected pope and chose the name Pope Leo XIV. White smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel to signal the result. Pope Francis, Latin America’s first pope, served from 2013 until he died on April 21, 2025.
Pope Leo XIV is a US citizen by birth and a naturalized Peruvian. He was born in Chicago and began his clerical career there before being sent to Peru, where he served for nearly forty years in northern cities. In 2015 Pope Francis appointed him bishop of Chiclayo, and he also obtained Peruvian nationality that year.
At St. Peter’s Square he interrupted prepared remarks in Italian and spoke in Spanish to thank his former diocese. News and video from Chiclayo showed a strong emotional reaction and local joy at the announcement.
