An Ebola outbreak is centred in the Mongbwalu health zone in Ituri province. Many people are believed to be sick and the virus may be a rare form called Bundibugyo, for which no licensed vaccines exist.
Local medical staff say rapid intervention kits were not yet available and they were told the kits were "on their way". Health workers lack full protective equipment and are afraid but continue to treat patients.
The World Health Organization has sent emergency supplies, experts and mobile laboratories, and neighbouring countries are preparing in case the outbreak spreads.
