Health authorities are working to contain an Ebola outbreak in the Bulape health zone in Kasai province. Since the outbreak began in late August, WHO reports 48 confirmed and probable cases and 31 deaths. WHO is coordinating with nearby governments and says Angola is the top priority because it shares a land border with Kasai. Other countries are at moderate risk.
WHO gave ministries tools for readiness assessments and seven countries completed the process. Surveillance at ports of entry is a key priority and WHO is working with the International Organization for Migration to monitor movement. A vaccination campaign began on 14 September and at least 600 people have received the Ervebo vaccine. Nearly 950 contacts are being monitored and contact follow-up rose from 19% to more than 90%.
