Madagascar's education system has become weaker over the last 20 years and now limits the countrys development. Problems begin in primary school and continue through universities. Many children finish primary school without basic skills, and many skilled young people emigrate.
In 2025 only 66.6 percent of girls and 60.6 percent of boys complete primary school, while global completion is 88.3 percent. Gross enrollment is 36 percent for girls and 34 percent for boys in secondary school, and 6 percent in tertiary education. Only 25 percent of children can read well after primary school. In 2024 about 60 percent of primary and preschool teachers were FRAMs and the pupiltoteacher ratio in primary school was 39.81.
