Researchers tested widely available generative AI models such as ChatGPT, Claude and LLaMa. They asked the AI to read short daily video diaries or longer recordings of people talking about their thoughts.

The data came from more than 160 people collected in real-life and lab settings. The AI then answered personality questions the way each person would. Older text-analysis methods did not perform nearly as well as these newer AI systems.

Results showed the AI scores closely matched how people rated themselves and often matched self-ratings better than ratings from friends or family. The AI ratings also predicted emotions, stress, social behaviour and whether someone had sought help for mental health.
