Many parents wonder when a child should have a personal phone. Child development experts say about middle school, around age 12 or 13, can be a common time because children keep friendships and join after-school activities.

Some families return to a home landline. A landline has no apps, texting, or social media and is used at home, so it can help family talks and listening skills. Experts warn that too much screen time can harm sleep and mood, so open conversation and guided use work better than strict bans.

Before giving a smartphone, ask if there is a real need, if the child is responsible, and if they can limit screen time.
